Philips Respironics Actiwatch 2
The Actiwatch Family of Ambulatory Actigraphy Devicesare small, rugged, actigraphy-based data loggers that record a digitally integrated measure of gross motor activity. Each model of Actiwatch actigraph is equipped with a highly sensitive accelerometer as well as the ability to record additional data channels. The Actiwatch-2 uses actigraphy principles to provide sleep schedule variability, sleep quantity and quality statistics and daytime activity patterns so you can better identify therapeutic options and understand responses to treatment for patients. The Actiwatch 2 provides objective data on sleep/wake patterns for multiple days in a subject’s ambulatory environment with the comfort and aesthetics of a standard wrist watch.
In addition to sleep/wake activity recording, Actiwatch 2 has the ability to record information about the amount and duration of ambient white light illuminance, in units of lux. Actiwatch-2 also features a comfortable design to enhance patient compliance, a large 1 MBit storage capacity, a rechargeable battery, a waterproof casing and the ability to be used with a hospital band. Communication to the Actiwatch-2 is achieved via USB connection to the sleek Actiwatch 2 communications dock. These features, among others are why Respironics’ Actiwatch products make it easier than ever to implement actigraphy.
General Actigraphy Features
Activity level is recognized as a valuable indicator for medical problems and can provide answers to many research questions. Activity levels correlate with sleep/wake patterns, pain level, mood, energy expenditure, fatigue/alertness and other quantifiable parameters. An Actiwatch actigraph also provides an objective record for tracking and documenting normal and abnormal sleep/wake patterns.
Two examples of the use of the Actiwatch are:
Sleep/Wake Patterns
General Activity Level
A digitally integrated recording of wrist activity is a reliable indicator of Sleep/Wake state. The Actiwatch is an actigraphy device that is the size of a standard wrist watch. It allows for the recording of the smallest movements for days, weeks, or even months.
When worn on the wrist, an Actiwatch actigraph can generate an Activity record like the one shown below to be used as a tool to document:
- Sleep/Wake Patterns
- Sleep Disorders
- Circadian Rhythms Disorders
- Disturbances brought on by Shift WorkReal time impedance display
- Basic Activity Levels
- Compliance with Exercise Routines
Actiware Software
Actiware Software is a flexible and powerful software package that allows users to easily configure and retrieve recorded data from all Actiwatch models in addition to data management, analysis and export. Actiware displays activity, illuminance, and event marks in an easy to read Actogram format allowing long term sleep/wake patterns to be easily identified. Actiware can also quantify important sleep statistics such as Sleep Time, Sleep Efficiency, and Wake After Sleep Onset based upon user defined or automatically determined rest intervals. Actiware is equipped with user-friendly new features that automatically display off-wrist times, irradiance information for three color bands of light, as well as automatic detection of major and minor rest intervals making analysis of activity data for sleep easier than ever.
