Rodent Dose Puller

The Instech RDP automatically fills syringes during rodent oral dosing studies.

The device receives the dose directly from your LIMS system once the animal is scanned, then fills the syringe more precisely than is possible by hand and without the chance of human error.

It speeds the dosing process by partially filling the syringe while you are picking up the next animal, letting you do two things at the same time.

And, perhaps most importantly, the RDP does all the work of pulling back the syringe, reducing fatigue and the chance of thumb injury.

Features

  • Acquires dose information from direct LIMS connection, CSV file upload or manual entry
  • Works with 1, 3, 5, 10 and 20mL syringes
  • Compatible with feeding tubes from 22ga/25mm up to 13ga/150mm
  • WIFI or wired ethernet connection
  • Fill speed adjustable for viscous or frothy solutions

Dramatic improvements for large-scale rodent dosing studies.

The Rodent Dose Puller is the result of a multi-year development effort in collaboration with a large contract research organization. It started with the primary objective of protecting technicians from thumb injury. For example, ergonomics experts state that a human thumb should pull no more than 20 doses per day of oil using a 5mL syringe; this is simply not possible when dosing studies involve hundreds of rats.

Meanwhile, Instech know from their experience with plastic feeding tubes that the technique of rodent oral gavage is a delicate one, learned over thousands of repetitions. Solving the ergonomics problem with a peristaltic or syringe pump connected to a feeding needle would change the feel of the procedure and possibly endanger the animal.

In the end, they have developed a device that:

  • Protects technicians by eliminating the chance of thumb injury
  • Reduces dose error by roughly 50%
  • Speeds up the dosing process by approximately 15%

We look forward to learning how the RDP can help you and your organization.
